At Tororo Mixed Secondary School (TOMSS), we believe that education should not only prepare
students academically but also nurture responsible global citizens. We are therefore deeply
committed to contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 13. SDG
7 focuses on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all, while
SDG 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. As a school that values
both academic and moral development, we have deliberately taken practical steps to ensure that
our operations and learning environment support sustainable living and climate resilience.
In our fight against climate change and its impacts, TOMSS has completely abolished the use of
polythene bags (“kaveras”) and single-use plastics within the school premises. This decisive
action is aimed at reducing plastic pollution and promoting responsible waste management
among our students and staff. We believe that creating a plastic-free school culture equips young
people with habits that protect the planet both today and in the future.
In partnership with Shalom Research Empire (SHARE), we have introduced training programs on
Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) for our students. Through these trainings, students learn
sustainable farming methods that help them adapt to climate change while ensuring food
security. In addition, TOMSS has launched a tree planting campaign with a target of planting
2,000 trees in and around the school compound. This effort not only enhances our green spaces
but also contributes to carbon sequestration and ecosystem restoration in the wider Tororo
community.
As part of our commitment to clean and renewable energy, our students have also been trained
in briquette fuel production an affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy alternative. With
support from SHARE, these trainings provide our learners with skills to create eco-friendly fuel
sources that reduce reliance on wood and charcoal, thus mitigating deforestation and improving
air quality. This initiative directly supports both environmental protection and energy
sustainability.
We are determined to do even more in the coming years. At TOMSS, sustainability is not just a
project it is a core value. We continue to explore new partnerships, expand our environmental
programs, and empower our students to become champions of climate action and clean energy
in Uganda and beyond. Together with our stakeholders, we remain fully committed to building a
cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for all.
